7 Things to Do Before You Move In

With all of the excitement of moving into your new home, it’s easy to forget some of the essential things you’ll need to do before the big day. Thankfully, we’re here to help! We’ve put together a list to guide you through the weeks leading up to your move-in date, so your move will go as seamlessly as possible.

Take Measurements and Go Shopping!

It’s always a good idea to know the measurements of your new home before you move in. If you’re buying a brand new home or building from the ground up, your Sales Agent will be able to provide you with a set of floor plans that show the size of each room in your new home. These will make planning out your space a breeze. If you’re buying an existing home, the process may be a little different. Floor plans with dimensions aren’t always available. Talk to your Sales Agent to see what information is available to you.

Once you know the dimensions of your home, you can decide whether or not you’ll need to upgrade your existing furniture. A good tip is to draw it out! It doesn’t have to be perfect, but you can get a good idea of how the furniture is going to fit in your new space, if you need something a bit bigger, or could do without a few pieces.

And now, the best part – go shopping! Take your floor plans and dimensions and hit the stores (or stay in your comfy pajamas on the couch and hit the internet!). Be sure to ask about when your new furniture and appliances will be available for pick-up or delivery, and if possible, try to book it to coincide with your move-in date.

Book Your Movers

If you’re not planning or able to move all of your belongings yourself, it’s time to start researching companies that will help you on the day of your move. Start by deciding how much you’re willing to spend on the service. Many companies will post their rates online, but we recommend to get in contact with the company to avoid having an unexpected cost added to your bill. Also, be sure to check reviews or customer testimonials on various companies. This will give you the best idea of which company will fit your needs and budget.

Once you have narrowed down your search, check availability. Start with your preferred company to book the day you need, and work down the list if necessary. Keep in mind, some seasons are busier than others; once you know your firm move-in date, don’t wait until the last minute to try to book your movers.

If you have pets, this is also the time to consider if you’ll need someone to care for them during the move. Moving can be stressful on them too, so having them in a safe place is essential. There are companies available that will take your pet for the day, or boarding facilities if you need a few to get settled. Keep in mind, many require a trial run first, so book your pet in ahead of time to see how they do. If you choose to keep your pet at home with you during the move, be sure to keep an eye on them as there will be a lot of traffic coming in and out of your home.

Create Your Packing Checklist

Even though it might be awhile before you need to start packing, put together a list of things you’re going to need. This could include boxes or storage bins to protect your belongings, tape, bubble wrap or markers for labeling. If you’re moving items yourself, a dolly or rolling platform will come in handy with the heavier items. You may also need some cleaning supplies, either for your existing home or the one you’re moving in to. If you’re painting, make sure you include those items on your list as well. Having a list will make things easier when it’s time to pick up everything you need, and you won’t have to make multiple trips to the store to do so.

Update Accounts and Address Changes

With all of the excitement of getting ready to move, it is easy to forget that there are people you need to inform of your upcoming change of address. This can include your service providers, such as phone, internet, electricity and hydro, your driver’s license and health card, employers, or health care professionals. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has put together a great checklist  so you can keep a record of who you have contacted.

This is also the time to decide whether you’ll be staying with your current providers, or switching to a new one. Some of your current services may not be available in your new area, or you may be able to get a better deal elsewhere. Do a bit of research beforehand so you’re prepared when it’s time to make the call, and make sure to schedule the installation in your new home.

Get Packing

It’s time to start packing, and it always seems to be a surprise of how much you have accumulated over the years. Now is a good opportunity to go through your belongings and decide if there is anything that doesn’t need to make the trip to your new home. Have a “donate” box ready to go, and throw in the items that you no longer need. There are many organizations in Winnipeg that will gladly accept gently used items, such as Diabetes Canada  or Siloam Mission. Do a quick web search to find a local donation spot close to you.

Packing can take a while, so be sure to pack the items that you don’t use as often first. This could be your winter coats and accessories if you’re moving during the summer, or kitchen appliances that you won’t be needing any time soon. Make sure you’re labeling your boxes as you go, and be detailed in your descriptions so there won’t be any confusion when it comes to finding which box you need when unpacking. It’s also a good idea to pack an “open first” box. This can include the essentials that you’ll need as soon as you move in, such as some clothes, toiletries or kitchen utensils.

Consider packing your valuables in a separate box and taking them with you. While this usually won’t be an issue with reputable companies, it’s not unheard of for boxes to get lost along the way. Prevent losing belongings that hold special meaning to you and keep them with you for the trip.

And finally, take an inventory of all of your boxes and number them. If one happens to get misplaced, you’ll know exactly what you’re missing and it’ll make it easier to track down.

Clean, Clean, Clean

We understand that cleaning your old place is not at the top of everyone’s priority list, but it isn’t something that should be overlooked. If you are moving out of a previous home, you probably did a deep clean when you listed it on the market, which will make this step easier. Sweep the floors, remove photo frames or curtains (depending on inclusions in the contract), and clean out any appliances that are being left behind. Be sure to check the garage to make sure you haven’t missed anything, and dispose of any toxic chemicals. A good rule of thumb is to leave your old house in the manner that you would want when you move into your new home.

MOVING DAY

The day is finally here, and we’re all very excited!

Start early so you’re not scrambling to get everything ready for when the movers arrive, and pack any last minute items that you may have left out. Grab your inventory checklist and be sure to cross-check it with that of the movers, so you know everything is accounted for. Once it’s all packed up and ready to go, do one final sweep of your old home to ensure you have everything – check all of the closets and cupboards, and do a once over of the yard, garage or any storage sheds you may have. Make sure all the windows and doors are locked, the lights are turned off, and leave behind any keys that the new owner or landlord will require.

Once that’s all finished, it’s time to get on the road to your new home! This is where the fun truly begins – congratulations on your new home!
