6 Brilliant Backsplash Ideas Featured ImageOne of the best parts (if not THE best part) of building a new home is being able to pick and choose all of its amazing features - especially in the kitchen! From beautiful flooring and glimmering countertops to eye-catching islands and one-of-a-kind cabinetry, you get to pick and choose from an array of features to make your kitchen uniquely yours.

This, of course, includes your backsplash! Often underrated but never overlooked, backsplashes are a popular way to add some life to the kitchen. Whether you’re looking for something flashy or something more traditional, we have some great ideas!

6 Brilliant Backsplash Ideas Pattern Image1. Pick a Great Pattern...

Probably the most popular design for backsplashes is the subway tile design - using rectangular pieces laid horizontally. But, If you want to shake it up a little, look for other types of tile backsplash patterns.  For instance, you could take those same rectangular tiles, but arrange them vertically rather than horizontally. You can also do a mosaic pattern, diamonds, or a chevron style.

2. ...Then mix it up!

Most people stick to the same pattern or design throughout the entire backsplash, but you don’t have to! In particular, the area behind the stove could be the perfect place to change the design a bit while still fitting in with your overall look. For instance, you could incorporate the same tile from the rest of the backsplash but work in a few other colours for a new look!

Traditionally, the backsplash is the area in between the counter and the cabinets. Most people add their backsplash details only in this area. When there are no cabinets – like behind the stove – people tend to draw an imaginary line of where the cabinets would be - only filling half the space. However, you can create a more interesting look by filling that entire area!  It adds height to the kitchen and gives it a luxurious feel.

4. Add a Bit (or a lot!) of Colour

This is also the perfect opportunity to incorporate a little pop of colour. If you like a more vibrant, expressive colour, doing the whole space in a bright colour like yellow or orange can look really refreshing (though you may want to keep your cabinets neutral).

If you prefer your colours a little more subdued, consider a pattern that incorporates just a little treat of colour here and there. For instance, if you’re mostly using a grey backsplash, you could include about ten red tiles scattered throughout the design. It gives the backsplash some personality, but it’s subtle enough it won’t be the entire focal point of the kitchen.

5. Unexpected Textures

Tile is often used for backsplashes because it looks attractive and is easy to clean.  But if you'd prefer something truly unique, there are other materials to choose from.

stone backsplash, for example, can give your home an elegant look. A wood backsplash might give your kitchen some rustic appeal while metal backsplashes might look especially nice in a French country kitchen design (but could work equally well with a sleek, modern style). When using these alternative materials, though, you’ll want to be sure it’s coated with something that makes it easy to wipe down.

6. What About Wallpaper?

While the thought of a wallpaper backsplash might have you thinking of your grandmother's kitchen - know that wallpaper has come a long way over the years! Not only is it easier to apply, clean and remove than ever before, but the large variety of designs in wallpaper really opens up your options. You could have flowers, stripes, or just about anything else.
