Broadview’s Top Colour Trends for Your Home featured ImageWhether you’re building a new home for the first time or just thinking about giving the walls in your current home a fresh look, it’s smart to start by carefully selecting the paint colours. You want something that’s trendy, but not so trendy that it’s going to look dated in a year or two.

Having trouble finding a place to start? We offer suggestions for different types of people, no matter what your taste.

For the Traditionalist

You like to keep things simple. While you might choose something bold and bright for furniture or artwork, you’re not the type of person who’s willing to splash a bright colour all over the walls.

You want to stick with neutral colours. Instead of a stark white, consider colours that are “almost-white”. They might have a slight undertone to the colour or simply be better able to adapt to changing tones in the light throughout the day, such as Benjamin Moore’s “Decorator’s White.” The paint company’s “Balboa Mist” is another good choice for those who like a neutral backdrop. It’s a light grey that’s making their 2019 palette.

For the Nature-Lover

Many people like having a natural look in the home, and in the past, they’ve tried to do that by incorporating a lot of green into the space — sometimes on the walls, but often just in plants or other decorations. This year, the latest trend for nature-lovers is to seek out the types of colours that you’d find in wood.

Some choose to get this look by having a lot of exposed wood in the home, such as hardwood floors, natural-looking cabinetry, and exposed beams. Others choose to paint a brown-ish colour, such as Behr’s Amber Autumn. This shade of brown adds a lot of warmth to the room while still feeling light and airy.

For the Romantic

Perhaps you’re the type of person who likes their home to have a softer feel. You love having fresh flowers around the space, and you want a home that feels cozy and intimate.

Pastel colours have been out of favour for some time, but they’re making a slight comeback. Benjamin Moore is featuring a colour called “Head Over Heels” that is pink in a way that feels more neutral than a traditional pastel pink. Feel free to go crazy with a brighter pink like “Baby Girl” when you’re decorating a kid’s room, though. A colour like this would pair nicely with a deep brown.

For the Kid at Heart

Your driver’s license might indicate that you’re an adult, but that doesn’t mean you have to make a lot of boring choices for your walls. Now that you own your own home, you’re able to have a little bit of fun.

Fortunately, we’re seeing a shift to some fun, bright colours. The Pantone Color of the Year for 2019 is a bright coral colour. You could have even more fun with something like this by doing stripes on the wall. Alternatively, something like a lime green or a turquoise could be fun.

For the Diva

When you have a flair for the dramatic, you want a home that looks like it was made for the royalty that you are.

You might consider Behr’s Color of the Year, which is a deep shade of blue. Other jewel tones like a purple or red can also look especially elegant. To use these rich colours effectively, though, you want to make sure that you use them in a room that gets plenty of light. Otherwise, the feeling could turn too dark.

For the Techie

Are you looking forward to having a super-modern home with all of the latest tech? You’ll probably want walls that act as a background for all of your tech.

Many people are incorporating funky smart lights into the home’s design. At the touch of a button, you can instantly change the colour of the lights. The best choice for something like this is a neutral colour that will allow the coloured lights to take centre stage. The almost-whites and light greys are probably your best choice.

Colours are a fun way to let your personality shine through. Think carefully about what types of colours you want to have in your home.
